I don't know if any of you have been affected by the gas shortage but those of us in the Charlotte area sure have. I left home yesterday on my way to church, sitting between a quarter of a tank and empty. Plenty of gas to get to church and back home. But certainly not enough to get to my parents today and to work on Monday. I was not one of the crowd in the last week or so who got in a panic and sat in gas station lines for hours on end.
I stopped at the gas station right by our house, not a drop of gas in the whole place. I hit the interstate still not too worried. Went to church, which was great, as usual and then decided I'd head into Mooresville. Passed two gas stations right beside one another, again, not a drop of gas between the two. Now I am starting to panic just a tad bit. The needle on the gas gauge slowly crept closer to E. What if I run out of gas? What if there is not a drop of gas to be had between here and home? Will I really have to call in work on Monday because I can't get there? Passed another gas station, and yes you guessed it, no gas. I finally reached my tried and true gas station in M-town and praise there was some gas and I didn't have to wait in line. There for a moment, that feeling of panic I suffered, was not very comforting. But I also thought about the time say during WWII, when everything was rationed. I just wanted enough gas to get by. I wasn't trying to hoard it or anything. Amidst the panic of this past week there were people who pulled up to a pump, filled their cars, and then proceeded to fill up 5 gallon gas cans. What is the world coming to?
I choose love.....no occasion justifies hatred; no injustice warrants bitterness. I choose love. Today I will love God and what God loves. I choose gentleness...nothing is won by force. I choose to be gentle. If I raise my voice may it be only in praise. If I clench my fist, may it be only in prayer. If I make a demand, may it be only of myself. --Max Lucado

Next Stop
Kind of a weird title for someone who hasn't posted in awhile..........but there you have it. That's this year's yearbook theme. And you are the only ones outside of yearbook to know so keep the secret. Wait until you see the awesome cover we have designed. We are cutting out part of the front, but you will just have to wait to see the pictures when they come back from the Josten's artists........
What have the G-riff's been up to? Let's see...........Tug and Nor seem to be adjusting to school very well. It was rough dropping them off in the mornings those first couple of weeks. Nor's teacher said today that she is the little mother of the classroom. You can't even imagine that, can you??
T and I are working.......hard. My latest huge event was picture day last Friday and I have gotten so many compliments on how smoothly it went. A feather in my cap thankfully. Although I have to say that the picture company we currently are going with really stinks. Their customer service is sorely lacking. Fortunately my principal only signs contracts one year at a time. Which means if I have anything to say about it we will not be going with this company next year. They have taken for granted that they make thousands of dollars off us. Friday was the day I began to get sick. I think I had myself so worked up about the whole thing that I just catapulted myself into quite the cold, on top of working that night's football game. Finally starting to feel better.
The engine light in the van has been on for about 3 weeks. We know what the problem is, the part is on order and will be fixed on Monday and thankfully payday is Tuesday. There goes that measely ABC bonus T is getting. But oh well. At least it's a relatively easy fix. It also needs an oil change, inspection and something is wrong with the headlights. We'll get it all worked out.
Fall is in the air here. We just finished our first batch of chili. Don't laugh. It was very good too if I do say so myself. Now if I can just make it to the weekend.

Fireproof
Well......everything DOES in fact happen for a reason. Have you ever felt like not going to church or anywhere else for that matter, but you know in the deep down depths of yourself that when you leave your house, it's the best thing that could have happened to you in that moment?
That happened to me this evening and goes right along with my earlier post. I didn't feel like going anywhere tonight, but I was working the welcome desk at church so I had to be there. Tonight started the new series "Fireproof." I have shared how I have been struggling with many things, doubts about my job mostly and I knew that was the Devil himself. But here it was right in front of me this evening. Am I fireproof? Is my relationship with my husband fireproof? Are my relationships with my friends fireproof? For me, it's about positive thinking and knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that God is with me even when I seem so oblivious of it. My marriage is rock solid. I have already shared that I am married to the most wonderful guy ever. And I have amazing friends who lift me up. pray for me and hold me accountable. Thanks girls for being so much a part of my life. That was the message, are your relationships solid? Have you surrounded yourself with people you know you can trust with anything? I just want to be fireproof.

Why I Do What I Do
It's been no secret that I have been struggling lately........I have wondered a million times this past week why I decided to leave Salisbury High School and start all over again. And I have come to the realization that it IS starting all over again and that is why I have had such a hard time. I swore that I never wanted to do my first year at Salisbury again. Although this is a different school with a different population, students are still students no matter where you go-- with the same problems, drama and issues. I feel like I am back at square one and I have to build that reputation again. I found a letter on my desk the other day and here's what it said:
"I'm glad you said what you said about the church." It kinda opened my eyes enough to think and realize I'm not the only one who thinks that way :) So thank you.
P.S. Oh Yeah I want you to come to my church sometime, we are the same way--it's cool too--
P.S.S. I play on our praise band."
As a little side note, we had been discussing Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. In the prologue Chaucer introduces the 29 pilgrims on their way to see the place of Thomas A Beket's murder. There are certainly some unsavory characters, some in high places like church officials. We got into a very interesting and enlightening conversation about religion. Love that kind of stuff!!! It makes them think.
Anyway, I won't put this student's name, but I have to tell you that when I read that I nearly broke now. It's a simple note.........but it brought it all home for me. This is why I teach. This is why I am trying to make a difference. This is why I try to be the best example I can be to the students I am surrounded by. Nothing is an accident, there is always a purpose, we just may not know what that purpose is.

A Change of Plans

As most of you know, we had some babysitting issues last week. On Monday night, the first day of school I might add, the babysitter called and said her last day would be Sept. 5th. I freaked out of course. I am a planner.......and this couldn't have come at a worse time. But such is life sometimes. Then my child came home the next day with no diaper on. You might ask yourself, "How does a person forget to put a diaper on a child?" Friends......I don't have the answer to that question so now I am really freaking out. My wonderful husband started making calls and asking around. We found a great place Wednesday night called Carpenter's Kids and they could take the kids Friday. Thank goodness for Mom, she was able to watch them on Thursday. Thanks Mom for bailing us out. Tug and Nor attended the first day of school on Friday. It wasn't what we had planned, but everything happens for a reason. It's now been a week and they seem to enjoy it. That peace of mind is worth bunches!!!

A Great Labor Day

We had a nice, semi-restful weekend after the not-so-great week we had last week. Saturday was spent running errands and going grocery shopping. Sunday we spent the day with Nana and Poppop and had a very good lasagna (I really don't think I spelled that right). Monday we headed out the lake to spend the day with a guy T works with and his family. And listen, sometimes I really wonder what some people do for a living. Don't get me wrong, I love my home and we are extremely blessed, but I had no idea that this place existed. It's right on the lake, not 10 minutes from our house. They have a community pool that overlooks the lake, a section of the development where the land alone goes for upwards of $400,000. Just the land!!!! People are putting 6 million dollar houses out there. It just boggles my mind. Anyway, we went swimming in the pool, headed out on the lake, and for the first time ever all the of us got to ride on a Sea-Doo. I had a blast, T --- well not so much. I thought for sure Tug or Nor would come back screaming, but they enjoyed it too.
